On 22 April 2011, Lieutenant Commander James Tiernan retired from naval surface in a ceremony on board the USS MISSOURI (BB-63), in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
Personal awards include: three Naval Commendation Medals, two Naval Achievement Medals, a Coast Guard Achievement Medal, two Armed Forces Expeditionary Medals, two National Defense Medals, Southeast Asia Medals, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Expert Medal (pistol) and Expert Medal (rifle).
Joined the team at RE/MAX Center in Grayslake as a Military Relocation Specialist starting a new career of service to others.
